The Community Mosaic

By learning to make bits-and-pieces mosaics from broken china and found objects, students will explore the metaphors of community building that the mosaic art form offers. Such metaphors include the mosaic’s assurance that from brokenness beauty can emerge and that from diverse parts a creative whole can be formed. As part of this exploration, students will design a group mosaic project with themes related to issues of school, community, and/or ecological healing. This project can be implemented as several mosaic panels to be displayed in school common areas or a stepping stone garden for a school outdoor classroom area or local park.
